It looked for a while like the Iola-Scandinavia boys’ basketball team was headed toward its second loss of the season.

The Thunderbirds trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half of their Central Wisconsin Conference matchup with Pacelli Dec. 30 in Iola and headed to the locker room at halftime on the short end of a 32-22 score.

The second half turned out to be a different story, however, as the T-Birds scored the first 23 points and went on to post a 60-43 win over the Cardinals.

The T-Birds took their first lead of the game – 33-32 – on Kaden Jueds’ basket. The run wasn’t over, as Iola-Scandinavia went on to score 12 more points before Jacob Schroeder scored the Cardinals’ first point of the half on a free throw with 8:31 remaining in the game.

Schroeder’s free throw cut the T-Birds’ lead to 45-33. The Cardinals never got any closer the rest of the game and didn’t make a basket until Charles Kulick scored with 4:23 remaining on the scoreboard clock.

Marcus Jaworski led the T-Birds with 18 points, while Brock Wester finished with 10. Pacelli’s Weston Peplinski led all scorers with 19.

Iola-Scandinavia improved to 4-1 on the season and will travel to Marathon Tuesday, Jan. 5, before resuming CWC-East play at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, at home against Shiocton.
