The New London boys’ basketball team hit the road for the first round of the WIAA state tournament and returned home with a win.

Gabe Wohlt’s 24 points helped give the Bulldogs a 70-61 win over Fox Valley Lutheran Feb. 16 in a Division 2 regional quarterfinal.

The win sets up a regional semifinal matchup Friday, Feb. 19, between the fifth-seeded Bulldogs and top-seeded Ashwaubenon. Tipoff on the Jaguars’ home court is set for 7 p.m.

A pair of three-pointers gave the fourth-seeded Foxes an early 13-12 lead, but New London answered with a 12-0 run to take a 24-13 lead and the Bulldogs never trailed again.

A three-point play from Fox Valley Lutheran’s Drew Mears cut New London’s lead to 28-24 late in the first half, but the Bulldogs closed the half with a 12-5 run and led 40-29 at the break.

New London led by as many as 17 points in the second half. The Foxes cut the lead to nine points in the final 30 seconds, but never got any closer.

Connor Brinkman, Ben Porath and Mason Nyland also finished in double figures for the Bulldogs with 16, 12 and 11 points, respectively. Josiah Butler led Fox Valley Lutheran with 24 points.
