T-Birds top Waupaca

Three teams post 1-1 records at Iola-Scandy tournament

Three teams participated in a round-robin tournament May 15 at Iola-Scandinavia and each one ended up with a 1-1 record.

Iola-Scandinavia opened the tournament with a 10-4 win over Waupaca, but dropped a 5-4 decision to Marathon. Waupaca followed up its loss to the Thunderbirds with a 15-7 win over Marathon.

Iola-Scandinavia 10, Waupaca 4

Iola-Scandinavia broke open a 2-1 game with six runs in the fourth inning. The T-Birds outhit the Comets 10-9.

Alexa Christoph led the T-Birds at the ppate with three hits – two home runs and a double – while driving in five runs. She had an RBI double in the first inning, a solo home run in the third and a three-run home run in the fourth.

Katie Cherek had two hits for the T-Birds and drove in a run; Makayla Much drove in two runs with a fourth-inning double; and Taylor Kielblock had a double.

Makiya Wanty had two hits for Waupaca, including a two-run triple in the fourth inning. Macie Studzinski and Brooke Peterson had two hits and Rachel Thobaben added a solo home run in the fifth.

Lizzie Jones went the distance to earn the win for the T-Birds. She didn’t walk a batter and finished with nine strikeouts. Josie Peterson took the loss for the Comets.

Marathon 5, Iola-Scandinavia 4

Iola-Scandinavia struggled at the plate in the second game of the day in a 5-4 loss to the Red Raiders.

The T-Birds missed several opportunities to score runs by leaving 11 runners stranded and striking out 12 times.

Christoph continued her hot-hitting for the day with three more hits, including a solo home run in the fifth inning. Clara Koles added a double in the fifth.

Julia Munoz took the loss for Iola-Scandinavia. She allowed six hits and struck out one batter.

The T-Birds also won two of three recent Central Wisconsin Conference East Division games.

They fell to Amherst 5-0 May 10, handed Menominee Indian a 32-3 loss May 11 and picked up a 6-1 win over Weyauwega-Fremont May 13.

Amherst 5, IolaScandinavia 0

The Falcons shut out Iola-Scandinavia in the teams’ first matchup of the season.

The T-Birds had singles from Marin Hoyord, Koles and Munoz and never got a runner to third base.

The Falcons had a 1-0 lead after three innings, but scored twice in the fourth and added two more runs in the sixth.

Munoz allowed three hits over four innings and took the loss.

Iola-Scandinavia 32, Menominee Indian 2 (3 inn.)

Iola-Scandinavia scored 13 runs in the first inning and went on to a 32-2 win over the Eagles in a game that was stopped after three innings due to the 15 run-rule.

Cherek had four hits and drove in three runs; Hoyord, Koles, Much and Lilly Fuhs each had two hits and drove in three runs; and Much had two doubles.

Munoz pitched the three innings to earn the win.

Iola-Scandinavia 6, Weyauwega-Fremont 1

Trailing 1-0, Iola-Scandinavia scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and added three more runs in the second.

Both teams finished the game with five hits. Jaelyn Sivertson had two hits for the T-Birds, including a two-run triple in the second inning and her first home run of her high school career in the fourth. Hoyord also hit her first career home run with a two-run shot in the first inning.

Jayden McCoy had two hits for the Warhawks, including a run-scoring double in the first inning to account for their lone run.

Munoz went the distance to earn the win for the T-Birds. She allowed five hits and one walk while striking out 12 batters.

Anna Meyer pitched the first four innings in taking the loss, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out four batters. Reliever Kelsie Bleck had five strikeouts.

The T-Birds have a pair of nonconference games scheduled for Thursday and Friday, May 20-21.

Iola-Scandinavia will host St. Mary Catholic May 20 before traveling to Winneconne May 21.

The T-Birds will return home to play a pair of CWC East Division games against Menominee Indian on Monday, May 24, and Shiocton on Tuesday, May 25.

All games will start at 4:30 p.m.
