On Entrepreneurship

Patrick Wood

Dear Reader,

What does it take to be an entrepreneur? Is it born in one’s blood? Is there a certain type of personality for building a business from scratch? What education and experiences does one need? Is it all luck, or is there truth to the adage,
“Fortune favors the prepared”?

These questions are not easily answered, but it is worthwhile to spend a few moments trying. Successful entrepreneurship seems to be based on character traits – nerves of steel, persistence, charisma, and a passion for a particular interest. But these alone are not enough. It also takes a sensitivity to the times and the insight to imagine market opportunities that others do not see.

Ultimately a more interesting question is why be an entrepreneur. The answers on this topic are equally varied, but ultimately it often comes down to the joy of the challenge of building a business, and the satisfaction of serving your customers, employees, the community, and ultimately your own family. You might call it a noble purpose, because building a business that serves a family and eventually many families is just that.
