Waupaca train depot turns 150

Potato bake, historical program set for Sept. 25

In 1871, the first train made its way down the newly laid railroad tracks in Waupaca.

Over the next century, the railroad put Waupaca on the map, helping the city gain the title of the Potato Capital of the World in the early 20th century.

Now 150 years later, the Waupaca Historical Society is commemorating this anniversary by hosting a potato bake luncheon and program at the historic Waupaca Railroad Depot.

The celebration will take place on Saturday, Sept. 25 at the Depot at 525 Oak St., with seatings for the potato bake at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Tickets are $15 per person, with each attendee receiving a commemorative souvenir. Each seating will also be followed by a brief presentation by Mike Kirk on the 150-year history of the railroad in Waupaca. All proceeds from the luncheon will go toward the ongoing restoration of the Depot.

The potato bake luncheon will include a baked potato, a variety of toppings, beverage, and a root beer float. Sixty tickets are available for each seating.

Tickets are available at the Holly History and Genealogy Center at 321 S. Main St. during open hours or by calling 715-256-9980 or emailing [email protected].

The Holly Center is currently open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and noon to 3 p.m. Fridays.

Event sponsors for this fundraiser include Cedar Crest Ice Cream, Three Squares Restaurant and Waupaca Rental.
