Vater wins boys’ race for Iola-Scandinavia

Four area cross country teams opened their season Aug. 26 at the Amherst Invitational at Standing Rocks County Park.

Iola-Scandinavia’s Charlie Vater had the top finish among local runners, as he won the boys’ race and helped the Thunderbirds place second in the boys’ standings behind Pacelli.

Team scores for the boys were Pacelli (44), Iola-Scandinavia (61), Ozaukee (68), Brillion (82), Manawa (141), St. Mary Catholic (147), Amherst (163) and Waupaca (185).

Lourdes Academy won the girls’ competition with 32 points, followed by Amherst (50), Ozaukee (56), St. Mary Catholic (93), Manawa (126), Brillion (134) and Iola-Scandinavia (187).

Clintonville and Marion did not have complete boys’ and girls’ teams.

Vater turned in a time of 17:26.5 to win the boys’ race, while other times and places for Iola-Scandinavia included Robert Vater (fifth, 17:49.4); Jacob Lashua (14th, 20:03.2); Dylan Donovan (20th, 20:9.7); Ian Koss (21st, 20:47.8); Samuel Groeschl (36th, 22:31.4); and Aaron Jones (51st, 26:08.6).

Manawa’s runners included Zachary Schertz (24th, 21:16.3); Ricky Pingel (26th, 21:17.3); Matthew Thoma (28th, 21:30.8); Justin Buschke (30th, 21:46.1); Keither Jepson (33rd, 22:00.1); Noah Bortle (48th, 23:49.3); and Ted Emmert (49th, 24:15.4).

Ian Sherman led Waupaca by placing 23rd in 21:06.3. Other places and times for the Comets included Andrew Jones (34th, 22:05.8); Brock Keil (37th, 22:37.7); A.J. Nimmer (44th, 23:08.6); Owen Lencki (47th, 23:33.6); Gage Anderson (50th, 25:45.1); and Brett Strohbusch (53rd, 28:08.2).

Jesse Wilson placed 11th for Clintonville in 19:42.8). Other places and times for the Truckers included Cody Carrico (28th, 21:27.6); Mason Carrico (33rd, 21:56.5); and Ethan Hansen (40th, 22:15.3).

Amherst’s Lia Peterson won the girls’ race in 21:14.

Manawa’s runners included Jolie Jaeger (12th, 23:09.1); Makenzie Jo Krueger (18th, 24:16.6); Marilyn Klatt (27th, 25:24.2); Alecia Weber (29th, 25:55.9); and Daisy Krueger (40th, 31:22.4).

Iola-Scandinavia’s runners included Tara Thompson (34th, 26:37.6); Chloe Timdal (35th, 26:51.9); Briar Williams (38th, 27:52.7); Kelly Jones (39th, 29:02.8); Clara Koles (41st, 32:04); Morgan Richter (42nd, 34:59.4); and Abby Isermann (43rd, 35:17.3).

Jasmine Wilson placed 25th for Clintonville in 25:02.3, while teammate Elektra Fields was 47th in 28:46.8.

Waupaca had four runners in the girls’ race. Sienna Timm led the Comets by placing 34th in 26.28. Other places and times included Leota Studzinski (37th, 26:48.5); Cecelia Harms (40th, 27:10.4); and Mia Koehler (54th, 31:43.5).
