Snow plow hits gas meter

An explosion forced the evacuation of an apartment complex in the 500 block of Wisconsin Street in Waupaca.

Shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, a caller reported a gas leak after a snow plow struck a gas meter, according to the Waupaca Police Department.

By the time officers arrived, the gas had exploded, blowing out one wall of the building and causing a fire.

Eight residents of Countryside Estates, 517 W. Wisconsin Ave., were safely evacuated from the building. No injuries were reported.

CaHoots Adult Day Service provided temporary shelter for those who were displaced.

Assisting at the scene were the Waupaca police, Waupaca firefighters, Waupaca County sheriff’s deputies, Wisconsin State Patrol, firefighters from Scandinavia, Weyauwega, Ogdensburg, Manawa and Amherst, Gold Cross Ambulance, Wisconsin Public Service, WE Energies, Waupaca County Department of Health and Human Services, Red Cross and Salvation Army.
