Waupaca hockey team hosts tournament

The Waupaca boys’ hockey team posted a 2-1 record at the Waupaca Hockey Holiday Tournament.

Waupaca hosted six varsity and junior varsity teams Dec. 28-30 at the Waupaca Ice & Expo Center.

The Comets wrapped up the tournament Dec. 30 with a 6-2 win over Viroqua after dropping a 3-2 decision to the WNS Storm Dec. 29 and picking up a 4-2 win Dec. 28 over Negaunee, Michigan.

Waupaca 6, Viroqua 2

The Comets outshot the Blackhawks 58-16.

Braeden Ryan and Blake Schoenecker opened the scoring for Waupaca with first-period goals.

Max Gusmer’s goal in the second period gave Waupaca a 3-0 lead, but Viroqua cut into the lead on Austin Nunhdahl’s goal.

Ryan and Levi Olson scored in the third period to give Waupaca a 5-1 lead before Viroqua answered with a goal from Gavin Olson.

Joey Gullixon scored Waupaca’s final goal.

WNS Storm 3, Waupaca 2

Will O’Connor scored twice in the second period to help lead the Storm to the win.

O’Connor’s goals gave his team a 2-0 lead before Hesslin Trzebiatowski found the net with 18 seconds remaining in the period.

Michael Adank gave the Storm a 3-1 lead in the third period before Alex Gusmer scored for Waupaca.

Both teams had 31 shots in the game.

Waupaca 4, Negaunee 2

Tyler O’Dovero gave the Miners a 1-0 lead 1:01 into the game, but Waupaca responded with four unanswered goals.

Elliot Bartel and Max Gusmer scored in the first period and Schoenecker and Gusmer found the net in the second period.

O’Dovero scored the only goal of the third period.

Negaunee had a 33-22 advantage in shots.

Waupaca hosted Reedsburg Jan. 4 and will resume Great Northern Conference play at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, in Mosinee.
