‘Grow Potatoes in a Bag’

Waupaca program starts April 29

In 1885, Waupaca’s potatoes were crowned the best in the world at an exposition in New Orleans. Just a few years later, Waupaca became known as the Potato Capital of the World.

Potatoes might not be the main crop in Waupaca any longer, but the community can try their hand at growing potatoes at an upcoming free event at the Hutchinson House Museum in South Park.

The Waupaca Historical Society and Waupaca Area Public Library will host the second annual “Grow Potatoes in a Bag” event at 6 p.m. Friday, April 29, at the Hutchinson House. Those unable to attend on Friday can attend the same program at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 30, also at the Hutchinson House.

The program will include a potato-themed story time, poetry reading by Anita Olson and a scavenger hunt. Visitors can then take home a grow bag with seed potatoes and soil.

After the growing season, participants can bring their potatoes to the historic Waupaca Depot on Sept. 10 for a weigh-in contest and potato activities. More information will be available closer to the August event.

Turners Fresh Market and Chain O’Lakes Home and Garden donated to this event.
