Johnson, Shirley J.

Shirley J. Johnson, age 86, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2022 at Theda Care Appleton.

Shirley was born December 23, 1935 in Waupaca WI to Floyd and Jean (Hebard) Button. She graduated from Waupaca High School. She was united in marriage on May 8, 1954 to Quinten D. Johnson and just celebrated their 68th anniversary.

In her earlier years, Shirley worked at Waupaca County Post. Later, she worked at Waupaca Abstract and Title until retirement. When the children were young, Shirley belonged to the Waupaca Curling Club. Shirley loved singing and was a member of the Sweet Adelines. She enjoyed needlepoint, and loved to bake and cook. Shirley was very talented writing many poems and jingles. She enjoyed listening to WDUX radio where she entered and won many contests.

Shirley enjoyed time spent outdoor deer hunting and fishing with Quinney. She taught Quinney to fish and he taught Shirley to hunt. Deer hunting was a special time at the house with Shirley ensuring everyone was well fed. Shirley was an excellent shot bagging a buck when others did not. Fishing was her passion. They always looked forward to the annual fishing opener on the Flambeau flowage and the spring Walleye run on the Wolf River.

Shirley is survived by her husband Quinten D Johnson of Ogdensburg; her children Jeff (Terry) Johnson; Jerry (Debbie) Johnson; Jann (Thor Nelson) Johnson; Jill (Jeff) Tyczkowski; grandchildren: Dan (Nancy) Tyczkowski; Hannah (Eric) Strelow; great-granddaughter Clove Madison Strelow. Preceded in death by her parents Floyd and Jean Button; in-laws Clarence and Dorothy Johnson.

A private family gathering will be held at a later date.

I’d rather be fishing, most of the time-morning or evening, rain or shine.
Just show me the tackle and give me the bait. Then watch me go fishing- the rest can just wait.
I’ll catch them and clean them and cook them up fast, and once we start eating, they surely won’t last!
I’d rather be fishing most of the time- morning or evening, rain or shine.

God bless you, Mom! Thank you for teaching us to fish. All our love- we will greatly miss you.
