Clintonville tops Amherst in overtime

By Greg Seubert

Upsets happen every week in high school football.

One of the biggest in Wisconsin took place Aug. 19 in Clintonville, as the Truckers opened their 2022 season by handing Amherst a 38-30 overtime loss.

Amherst, the defending Central Wisconsin Conference-Large champion, was coming off of an 11-1 season last year that included a 36-8 win over the Truckers in the first round of the WIAA playoffs.

Clintonville had the only touchdown of the first quarter, as Jack Yeager intercepted Matthew Glodowski’s pass and returned it 71 yards. Kade Rosenow then hit Jordan Wegener on the two-point conversion try and the Truckers took an 8-0 lead into the second quarter.

The Falcons answered Clintonville’s score with a pair of touchdowns to take a 14-8 lead at the break. Glodowski scored on a 5-yard quarterback keeper before connecting with Jake Derezinski on a 37-yard scoring pass.

The Truckers regained the lead in the third quarter with Rosenow’s touchdown passes of 40 and 37 yards to Sam and Jordan Wegener, respectively.

The teams combined for three more touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Glodowski hit Westin Allen for a 41-yard pass.

Rosenow found Sam Wegener for a 23-yard pass with under a minute to go in regulation to give the Truckers a 30-22 lead, but the Falcons answered with Glodowski’s 13-yard pass to Aidan Jastromski and Glodowski’s run for the two-point conversion.

The Truckers scored on their first overtime drive on Rosenow’s 9-yard pass to Sam Wegener and his two-point pass to Jordan Wegener.

Clintonville’s defense then held Amherst out of the end zone on the Falcons’ drive, as Glodowski overthrew his receiver on fourth down.

Amherst held Clintonville’s ground game to minus-14 yards on 10 attempts, but Rosenow completed 22 of 44 passes for 362 yards and four touchdowns.

The Falcons ran for 190 yards, with Glodowski leading the way with 78 yards. He also completed 12 of 27 passes for 211 yards.

Sam and Jordan Wegener combined for 15 catches for 303 yards.

Amherst outgained the Truckers 401-348.

The Truckers will head to Brillion Friday, Aug. 26, to face the Lions at 7 p.m. The team’s Northwoods Conference opener against Crandon will be played at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, in Clintonville.
