Waupaca shuts out Hortonville at home
By Greg Seubert
Not even Mother Nature could keep the Waupaca Lakemen from winning a third straight Dairyland Baseball League Grand Championship.
Rain halted the game Aug. 28 at Lakemen Field twice in the eighth and ninth innings, but the Lakemen held on for a 2-0 win over Hortonville.
The win is Waupaca’s fourth Grand Championship in a row and fifth in the last six years. The Lakemen beat Little Falls in the Badger Amateur Baseball Association’s title game in 2019 before joining the Dairyland the following year. Waupaca then won championships with wins over Shawano and Hofa Park in 2020 and 2021, respectively.
Waupaca’s runs came in the first and fourth innings.
Johnny Popham scored on Brendan Canterbury’s single in the first and a hit batter and passed ball led to the second run.
Colan Treml hit Walker Smith in the fourth. Smith moved to second on Jason Ellie’s sacrifice bunt and went to third on Davis Levine’s single before scoring on a passed ball.
Cameron Seidl held the Stars to one hit over eight innings and struck out 11 batters to get the win on the mound.
Hortonville had runners at first and second base in the top of the ninth inning off of reliever Jack Eagan, but a called third strike ended the game.
Luke Behm, Canterbury and Levine had two of Waupaca’s eight hits.
Waupaca outscored its opponents 17-2 in three playoff games and finished the season with a 39-5 record.
