The Manawa Rural Fire Department (MRFD) responded to a fire on the 900 block of Elm Street, shortly after 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14.

Witnesses reported seeing black smoke from several miles away.

“Once we got on scene, the middle of three buildings was fully engulfed with heavy smoke and flames,” said Fire Chief Josh Smith.

Semi-trailers were backed up to the front of the buildings. These were removed

Small explosions could be heard from what is believed to have been acetylene tanks or small LP tanks.

Due to ice, firefighters were working in slippery conditions but no injuries were reported.

Eventually, the Manawa Public Works arrived and spread salt around the area.

The building was a total loss. A semi-tractor in the building and two outside near the building were severely damaged.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The property was owned by Dan and Ruth Boerst, but rented out to two separate occupants.

“It was very hard to see it go up in flames,” said Ruth Boerst. “To say the least, I was shocked. I was praying that no one was hurt.”

Assisting departments

Assisting the MRFD were firefighters from Weyauwega, Waupaca, Iola Fire and Ambulance, Marion, Bear Creek, Ogdensburg-St. Lawrence, New London. Also at the scene were Manawa EMS and First Responders, Alliant Energy, Waupaca County Sheriff’s deputies, Wisnefske Excavating and the Manawa Public Works.

Smith reminded everyone of the importance of not coming near a fire scene.

“We all realize that incidents like this get posted to social media and everyone wants to know what’s going on, but please don’t come near the scene of an incident to try and see what’s happening,” Smith said. “We received reports of some responding units having to deal with these onlookers delaying them from getting on scene.”
