Iola firefighters responded to a house fire at 1:25 a.m. Thursday, July 27, at E2882 County Trunk GG, in Iola.

According to Chief Joe Barden, with the Iola and Rural Fire Department, when crews arrived at the scene, they found the house fully engulfed in flames and partially collapsed.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is unknown. The structure was a total loss.

The property is owned by Keith and Hilda Matthes of Muskego. No one was home at the time of the fire.

Assisting Iola were fire departments from Marion, Ogdensburg, Manawa, Rosholt, Scandinavia and Waupaca. Iola Ambulance, Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office and Waupaca County Highway Department were also at the scene.

“We want to thank everyone who came out and helped, even though it was at night it was still warm and humid,” said Barden. “We needed all the help to rotate fresh people in to give everyone a chance to rest and cool down for a bit. A big thank you to our Iola EMT’s for keeping the firefighters safe, hydrated and cooled down.”
