Peters, Hoffman

Shots fired in Fremont home

A domestic altercation resulted in shots being fired in a Fremont home.

Rene L. Peters, 52, Fremont, is charged with first-degree reckless endangerment as an act of domestic abuse, possession of a firearm while intoxicated and disorderly conduct with a dangerous weapon, also as an act of domestic abuse.

Brian R. Hoffman, 55, Fremont, is charged with felon in possession of a firearm, misdemeanor battery and disorderly conduct as acts of domestic abuse, possession of cocaine and THC, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Around 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, a 911 caller requested an ambulance at a home on Wolf River Drive in Fremont.

The caller, identified as Peters, reported that Hoffman assaulted her daughter.

Waupaca County deputies responded to the call.

According to the criminal complaint, Hoffman, Peters and her daughter had gone out drinking that night. They returned home and began arguing.

When Hoffman grabbed the daughter and threatened to break her arm, Peters armed herself with a handgun and fired it.

Peters told deputies that she fired the gun into the ceiling to scare off Hoffman.

Deputies reported finding spent 9mm casings on the floor and bullet holes in the walls and ceiling.

Hoffman said Peters was shooting at him.

The shooting apparently started in the upstairs bedroom, went down the hallway, then down the stairs to the foyer, then into the kitchen, the complaint says.

While searching the house, deputies reported finding two boxes of 9mm ammunition, a loaded ammo magazine, a plastic container with trace amounts of cocaine and 200 mg of THC in Hoffman’s bedroom.

Hoffman has six prior drinking and driving convictions and one prior conviction for felon in possession of a firearm.

Peters was released from custody after posting a $500 cash bond. Hoffman was released after posting a $600 cash bond.
