Soccer tournament starts Oct. 17

Area teams get first-round bye

First-round pairings have been announced for the WIAA State Boys’ Soccer Tournament.

Regional quarterfinals and semifinals in four divisions are scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 17.

Hortonville received a No. 3 seed in Division 2 and will host No. 14 Green Bay West at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 in a regional semifinal. The winner will play No. 6 Menasha or No. 11 Port Washington for a regional championship Saturday, Oct. 21, with the highest-seeded team hosting the game.

Waupaca and New London will compete in Division 3, have a bye in the first round and will open tournament play Thursday, Oct. 19. Fourth-seeded Waupaca has a bye and will host No. 5 Rhinelander at 7 p.m. in a regional semifinal. The winner will play No. 1 Mosinee, No. 8 Merrill or No. 9 Antigo for a regional championship Oct. 21, with the highest seed hosting.

The seventh-seeded Bulldogs will travel to Minocqua to face No. 2 Lakeland in a regional semifinal at 7 p.m. The winner will play No. 3 Shawano or No. 6 Medford for a regional championship Oct. 21, with the highest seed hosting.

Clintonville will compete in Division 4. The 12th-seeded Truckers have a bye in the first round and will travel to Manitowoc to face No. 5 Roncalli at 4 p.m. Oct. 19. The winner will play No. 4 Kiel or No. 13 Peshtigo for a regional championship Oct. 21, with the highest seed hosting.

Hortonville traveled to Waupaca Oct. 5 and returned home with a 4-0 nonconference win over the Comets.

Hayden Haessler, Dylan Glad and Cade Mansfield scored for the Polar Bears in the first half and Glad added an unassisted goal in the second half.

Roman Glad assisted on Glad’s first goal and Mansfield’s goal.

The Polar Bears outshot the Comets 7-3.

Both teams will wrap up the regular season Thursday, Oct. 12. Waupaca will travel to Oshkosh North for a nonconference matchup with the Spartans at 6:30 p.m., while Hortonville will host Appleton North for a scrimmage at 4:30 p.m.
