Nov. 18 wasn’t only the start of Wisconsin’s gun deer hunt, it was also opening day for the Waupaca boys’ hockey team.

Instead of opening the season with a win, however, the Comets dropped a 5-2 nonconference game to Homestead at the Waupaca Ice & Expo Center.

The Highlanders opened the scoring on Jeremy Miller’s unassisted goal 10 minutes into the game and added a power play goal two minutes later from Ian Vincent.

Waupaca answered with Dylan Smith’s goal with 2 1/2 minutes remaining in the opening period, with Warren Carlson and Blake Schoenecker getting an assist.

The Comets tied the game at 2-2 midway through the second period, as Adam Mace scored off of an assist from Alex Gusmer.

Waupaca never took the lead and Homestead wrapped up the scoring with three unanswered goals.

Liam McGourthy’s goal off of an assist from Caden Barnhill gave the Highlanders the lead for good with five minutes remaining in the second period.
Miller and Ben Waraksa added to the lead with goals in the third period.

Waupaca traveled to Merrill Nov. 21 for a nonconference matchup with the Bluejays and will head to Sheboygan Nov. 24-26 that also includes teams from Ashwaubenon, Kenosha Bradford, Oshkosh North, Sheboygan South, Whitefish Bay and Xavier.
