Van Lyssel, Martin James

Martin James “Marty” Van Lyssel, age 63, of Fremont, passed away peacefully at home after a short battle with cancer on Saturday, December 30, 2023.

He was born on February 11, 1960 in Appleton, WI, the son of the late Adrian (Ed) and Inez (Ulrich) Van Lyssel.

Marty graduated from Weyauwega-Fremont High School in 1978 and continued through life with many career paths. Most notably, Marty was an iron worker with the Local Union 8 for 25 years before retiring in February 2023.

“Van” was a motorcycle enthusiast and also had a passion for fast boats and he loved to shred trails on dirt bikes, snowmobiles, or really anything with a motor.

Marty liked to party too and many friends and coworkers referred to him as “Party Marty”. There are many stories and memories to be shared and he will be greatly missed.

Marty will also be remembered as a great dad. He instilled the value of family to his children and grandchildren and those values will be carried on into the next generations.

Marty is survived by four children, Samantha (Mike) Mauel, Adam, Kaylee and Kyle (Casey Lehndorf) Van Lyssel; eight grandchildren, Cameron, Carter and Casen Mauel, Adrian, Kiarra and Mason Van Lyssel, Rider and Riot Van Lyssel; brothers and sisters, Janice (Don) Timmers, Judy (Jim) Cooney, Wendy (Walter) Sztuczko, Debbie Kleist; Bob (Wendi) Van Lyssel; sister-in-laws, Evvy and Delphine Van Lyssel and Darlene Brown; his first wife and mother of Samantha, Nichole, David and Adam, Sharon Hammond; and his second wife and mother of Kaylee and Kyle, Jodie Van Lyssel; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Nichole, his son, David, four brothers, Jim, Dick, Dan and Dave, a brother-in-law, Dennis Kleist, and a nephew, Lance Kleist.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, January 5, 2024 at 1:45PM at the Lewin Funeral Home, 210 W. Main St., Fremont. Pastor Randy Prahl will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery. Visitation for Marty will be held on Friday, at the funeral home, from 11AM until the time of service.

Marty’s family would like to extend a very special Thank You to the nurses with Compassus Hospice. Your kindness and caring were very much appreciated. The family is also very appreciative of the spiritual support and comforting visits provided by Pastor Randy Prahl and Bodyne Kleist.
