Waupaca County Sheriff Tim Wilz awarded a medal for saving a victim’s life to Deputy Steve Long.

The presentation was made at the Jan. 16 Waupaca County Board meeting.

On Dec. 8, 2023, Long responded to a reported house fire at E6460 State Highway 54 in the town of Royalton.

When he arrived, Long encountered an elderly man in the driveway. He told the deputy his brother was on the ground near the house and could not get up.
Smoke and flames were coming from the house.

Long found the victim lying on the ground a few feet from the burning residence, Wilz said.

Long immediately decided to drag the elderly victim away from the house.

“Within four minutes of the call, Deputy Long arrived on scene and had everyone on a safe location,” Wilz said. “There’s no doubt the actions of Deputy Steven Long, his quick response and actions saved this elderly gentleman’s life.”
