Sanders, Betty L.

Betty L. Sanders, 94, of Aberdeen, SD, passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at her home at Davis Court.

Betty L. Winkler was born June 10, 1929, in Waupaca, WI, to Laurence Harry and Edna May (Dawes) Winkler. She attended Bunker Hill Grade School and Waupaca High School, graduating in 1946. She worked as a stenographer for Cary Mfg. Co. in Waupaca, WI.

Betty moved to Aberdeen, SD, in 1950. She was united in marriage to the love of her life, John “Jack” L. Sanders, on October 11, 1952, and they made their home together in Aberdeen. Betty worked at Aberdeen Glass Co. and the Milwaukee Railroad in Aberdeen.

Betty was an active and dedicated member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and also volunteered for various organizations in Aberdeen. She was a Girl Scout leader, “First Lady” of Aberdeen in 1989, and was instrumental in bringing the “Santa House” to Storybook Land. She loved dancing, music, gardening, playing bridge, and socializing with all her special friends. Betty especially enjoyed many memories with her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Blessed to have shared in Betty’s life are her three daughters: Jacqueline (Richard) Cook of Waupaca, WI, Nancy Cleveland of Aberdeen, SD, and Jody (John) Vallario of Edgewater, MD; grandchildren: Christine (Kenneth) Lewallen of Amherst, WI, Natasha Cleveland of Aberdeen, SD, Allison Vallario of New Hyde Park, NY, and Anthony Vallario of Edgewater, MD; great-grandchildren: Drew Lewallen and Claire Lewallen of Amherst, WI; siblings: Harold Winkler of Stevens Point, WI, Ramona Metz of Winona, MN, and Patricia (Ron) Cook of Waupaca, WI; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John “Jack” L. Sanders; parents, Laurence and Edna Winkler; brother, James Winkler; sister, Mareta Kapitzke; grandson, Jonathon Cook; parents-in-law, Lester and Margaret Sanders; son-in-law Steve Cleveland; sisters-in-law Mary Winkler and Mary Lou Sanders; and brother-in-law Roger Metz.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 2, 2024, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Father David Janes officiating.
A time of fellowship and luncheon will follow Mass at the parish hall.

Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery following the luncheon.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Thursday, Feb 1, at Schriver’s Memorial Chapel with a liturgical wake service starting at 7:00 p.m. followed by a time of sharing and rosary. Visitation continues one hour before Mass at the church.
