Rosemary (Rose) Lucille Black, formerly of Weyauwega, WI, passed away on April 1, 2024

at her home in Pensacola, FL after a courageous battle with leukemia.

Rose was born to the late William and Ramona Schumacher on September 7, 1952. She graduated from Weyauwega High School in 1970 and embarked on a military career shortly thereafter. While stationed in Stuttgart, Germany she met and was united in marriage on September 20, 1980 to her loving husband, Carl Richard Carter.

Rose initially started her military service in the U.S. Marine Corp followed by her enlistment in the U.S. Navy. She retired from active service in 1993. Making her home in Pensacola, she became employed with the Pensacola Department of Veterans Affairs. In August 1991, her life took a different direction when her husband suffered a traumatic brain injury as the result of an automobile accident. She became his caregiver until her death.

In her earlier years, she enjoyed their travels including to several European countries. In recent years she volunteered at West Florida Hospital and Pensacola Veterans Affairs. In her spare time she would crochet afghans, prayer shawls and baby blankets. She loved caring for their Boston Bull Terriers. Always a Green Bay Packer fan, in 1967 she attended the famous Ice Bowl with her father.

Rose is survived by her husband Carl Carter, a son Denny Black, grandsons Darren and Dylan Black, great grandson Declan Lee Black, brother Robert (Joan) Schumacher, nephew Joseph Schumacher, niece Lindsay (Sean) Murphy, an uncle Frank Haffner, cousins, sister-in-laws, and many nieces and nephews on her husband’s side of the family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an aunt and uncle Eugene and Lucille Napier, father-in-law and mother-in-law Paul and Josephine Carter, three brother-in-laws and two sister-in-laws.

A special thank you to dear friends Charles Howell, Marty and Debra Campbell, David and Ruth Mill for their kindness and support throughout her illness. Rose’s family would like to extend their gratitude and appreciation to the caregivers and staff at Woodlands Oncology, Infusion Center at West Florida and HCA West Florida Hospital Floor 6 South. Thank you for your care and compassion.
Assisting with the funeral were Faith Chapel Funeral Home, Cantonment, FL and Dahlke Funeral & Cremation Care, Weyauwega, WI. A private graveside service was held at Oakwood Cemetery, Weyauwega, WI.
