Wisconsin Civics Games
Waupaca and New London high schools will send students to the state Capitol in Madison to compete in the state finals on May 10.
Both local high schools were among the 18 teams from across the state that won regional competitions in this year’s Wisconsin Civics Games on April 18-19.
During the six virtual contests, teams faced off in head-to-head matchups, answering questions about the state budget, local elections, legislative term limits, quorums and other civics-related issues.
Public officials, legal professionals, newspaper editors and publishers served as judges for the Wisconsin Civics Games.
Each member of the team that wins the state level competition will be awarded a $2,000 scholarship to a Wisconsin college or university.
Members of the Waupaca High School team are junior Miles Wenberg, sophomore Alton Ross, junior Lukas Soto, senior Alyssa Durrant and Cory Nagel, advisor and high school social studies teacher.
Members of the New London team were seniors Wyatt Adamovich and Jack Kedinger, who qualified for state competition for their third consecutive year. Patrick Lawton, a social studies teacher, was the team’s advisor.
The Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation launched the Wisconsin Civics Games in 2018 in response to declining civics education and participation.
The state finals are open to the public and will be held at the Capitol in Room 411, beginning at 9 a.m. Friday, May 10. The games will be broadcast on WisconsinEye,
