Rhodes, Glenda

Glenda Rhodes, age 81, of Waupaca passed away at Bethany Home on April 24th, 2024.

Glenda Mae Terrell was born August 24th, 1942 to Glen and Melba (Deegan) Terrell. She and her younger brother grew up on the family farm north of Peterson, Iowa where she enjoyed nature and helping in the garden. She was very active in 4-H and spent many hours reading books from the local library. She attended school in Peterson, graduating from Sioux Valley High School in 1960 at the top of her class.

Glenda attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, graduating magna cum laude in 1964 with a degree in English. Her love of reading and learning led to a career serving various roles in libraries. She earned a Master of English degree from Colorado College in 1969 and a Master of Library Services Degree from the University of Texas in 1974.

While at Vermillion, she met the love of her life, Jack Rhodes of Lawton, Oklahoma. They were married in Peterson on June 25, 1964. Over the next 58 years, Glenda and Jack enjoyed many adventures as educational and employment opportunities that took them to Colorado Springs, Austin, Salt Lake City, Sioux Falls, and Oxford, Ohio. Glenda was passionate about preserving family history and had done extensive genealogy research for her family and others.

In 2002, they retired to Waupaca and became involved in the community. Glenda’s activities included membership on the Waupaca Library Board, the Waupaca Historical Society Board, WAGS, Master Gardeners, Winchester Academy Board of Trustees, and was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, book clubs, and social groups.

Glenda was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, in October of 2022, her parents, Glen and Melba Terrell, and special family member “Mellie.” Survivors include her brother, Birney (Gloria) of Peterson, IA, nephew, Michael Terrell of Milford, IA, niece, Melissa Elzen of St. Elmo, MN, five great nieces and nephews, numerous other family members, and many friends.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 18th at 10:00 AM at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Waupaca, followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 AM. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Fund, P.O. Box 425, Waupaca, WI 54981, or the Prairie Heritage Center, 4931 Yellow Avenue, Peterson, IA. 51047, or a charity of your choice.
