Officers from several law enforcement agencies surrounded a home in the village of Amherst Thursday, July 25.

As of Friday morning, the armed suspect has remained barricaded with the home for several hours.

They were attempting to arrest Jeffery E. Miller, 32, in connection with an attempted homicide of a law enforcement officer on July 23, according to the Portage County Sheriff’s Office.

Miller is accused of shooting Sauk County deputies after crashing his vehicle in Baraboo following a police pursuit on Tuesday, July 23.

At about 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sauk County contacted the Portage County Sheriff’s Office and requested assistance in apprehending Miller.
Portage County, Stevens Point Police and Marathon County Special Response Teams responded to 450 Mill Ave. and made contact with the residents.

A tactical team took five people into custody, but Miller fled into the house and began shooting at police, according to the sheriff’s office.

Law enforcement remains at the scene and Miller has not been taken into custody.

The sheriff’s office asked residents in the area of Mill Avenue in Amherst to shelter in place, away from windows, until this incident is resolved. All citizens should avoid this area.
