Waupaca drops Homecoming game

It’s beginning to sound like a broken record for the Waupaca football team.
Lose a game, then win a game.
Seymour snapped Waupaca’s one-game winning streak with a 21-10 Bay Conference win over the Comets. The Comets could have qualified for the WIAA playoffs with a win over the Thunder, but that win will have to come in one of Waupaca’s remaining games against West De Pere or Xavier.
Waupaca used up more than half of the first quarter on the game’s first drive. Cody Rasmussen’s 27-yard field goal gave the Comets a 3-0 lead with 5:37 remaining in the period.
However, those would be Waupaca’s final points until late in the game.
Seymour took the lead for good on the first play of the second quarter on Hunter Clark’s 17-yard pass to Peyton Dorn. The Thunder added to their lead with 7:07 remaining in the first half on Clark’s 7-yard quarterback keeper.
Peyton VandeHei’s 27-yard pass to Trent Blake with 2:13 to go in the third quarter gave Seymour a 21-3. Seymour kept that 18-point lead until Davis Levine hooked up with Hunter Marcom for a 29-yard touchdown pass with 1:58 to go in the game.
Seymour recovered the Comets’ onside kick attempt and was able to run out the clock.
The Thunder had a slim 295-273 advantage in total yards. Waupaca rushed for 119 yards, but Seymour held the Comets’ Jack Menzies to 26 yards on 14 carries.
Meanwhile, Seymour’s Bryce Kuske led all rushers with 117 yards.
Waupaca had a 154-101 advantage in passing yards with Menzies and Levine teaming up to complete 12 of 20 passes.
Waupaca will wrap up its home schedule at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, against West De Pere. The Phantoms remained unbeaten Sept. 28 with a 35-7 win over previously undefeated Menasha.
