Auditions for ‘Lion King’

Waupaca children’s theatre to present musical

The Waupaca Community Children’s Theatre will hold auditions for its summer musical from 3:30-6 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, at the Waupaca Learning Center on Shoemaker Road.

This year’s production will be Disney’s “The Lion King Jr.”

Based on the Broadway production and the Academy Award-winning motion picture, Disney’s “The Lion King” is a show about identity, family and responsibility and features songs written by Elton John and Tim Rice.

“The Lion King” is the story of Simba, a lion cub who is next in line to be king of the Pride Lands in the African savanna.

When Simba’s father Mufasa is killed by his uncle Scar, Simba runs away and Scar seizes power.

In addition to Simba, Mufasa and Scar, other characters include the baboon Rafiki, the lionesses Sarabi, Nala and Sarafina, the hyenas Shenzi, Banzi and Ed, the hornbill Zazu, the meerkat Timon and the warthog Pumbaa, along with giraffes, elephants, antelopes and wildebeests.

Auditionees need to come to the WLC music room prepared to sing a short song. They may be asked to read from a script.

Any youth auditioning without a parent or guardian present must have a signed note from home stating that he or she has permission to audition. Parents are also responsible for picking up their child promptly at the end of auditions.

Leah Fletcher, director of the Waupaca Community Children’s Theatre’s productions of “High School Musical” and “Shrek,” will direct.

Rehearsals, tentatively beginning June 10, will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday at the
Waupaca Middle School’s Knoepfel Auditorium.

Four performances will take place in the auditorium during the week of July 22-25. Parents are asked to not double-book students in activities such as summer sports, swimming lessons, or any other weekly activities during scheduled rehearsal times.
