Waupaca plays New London

Waupaca’s volleyball team opened its season by going 2-1 at a pair of invitationals.
The Comets headed to Amherst Aug. 29 for the Amherst Invitational two days after hosting a four-team tournament.
Amherst Invitational
Waupaca defeated Rosholt and Almond-Bancroft, but came up short against the host Falcons.
The Comets handed Rosholt a 25-18, 25-16 defeat; fell to Amherst 25-21, 25-23; and topped Almond-Bancroft 25-11, 25-14.
Hannah Jenson had a team-high seven digs against Rosholt, while Ava Degen added five assists and three kills; Maddie Rhodes had three kills; Madi Wennesberg had three assists; and Finley Charapata chipped in with three aces.
Degen led Waupaca with 11 assists against Amherst, while Tayler Carlson and Charapata added six and four kills, respectively; Jenson and Rhodes had a team-high nine digs; Brooke Peterson had seven digs; Carlson added six assists; Degen and Charapata had four kills; and Alivia Degen served up a pair of aces.
Team leaders against Almond-Bancroft included Rhodes (six kills, two blocks, two aces); Carlson (six kills, six assists); Ava Degen (six assists, six digs); Peterson (nine digs); Jenson (three aces); Alivia Degen (two aces); and Savannah Wehmeyer (two blocks).

The Comets opened the meet with a 25-18, 25-22 win over New London.
Team leaders included Ava Degen (nine digs, nine assists, four kills); Rhodes (nine digs, four kills); Charapata (four kills, two blocks); Jenson (seven digs); Carlson (10 assists); Alivia Degen (three aces); and Autumn Wennesberg (five kills).
Eventual champion Green Bay East then took two of three games from Waupaca 25-23, 12-25, 15-7.
Waupaca’s team leaders included Ava Degen (nine digs, seven assists, four kills); Carlson (six assists, five digs); Rhodes (11 digs, three aces); and Jenson (14 digs).
The Comets wrapped up the invitational with a 25-22, 25-17 win over Weyauwega-Fremont.
Team leaders included Carlson (eight assists; four kills, two aces); Ava Degen (seven digs, six assists, two blocks, two aces); Rhodes (seven digs, five kills, two aces); Jenson (nine digs); Peterson (seven digs); and Charapata (two blocks).
The Comets will open North Eastern Conference play at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, at home against Wrightstown.
