Waupaca senior scores twice against Shawano

By Greg Seubert

Welcome back, Terry Schmidt.

The senior running back scored both of Waupaca’s touchdowns and ran for a game-high 124 yards Aug. 30 in the Comets’ 21-14 Bay Conference loss to Shawano at Comet Field.

It was the first action of the season for Schmidt, who joined the team after Waupaca opened the season at Menasha.

Shawano opened the scoring in the opening minute of the second quarter on Brayden Dickelman’s 44-yard run, the first play of the Hawks’ second drive of the game.

Schmidt tied the game with 2:23 remaining in the second quarter with an 8-yard run, but the Hawks answered before halftime by driving 61 yards. Timm and Lowney connected on a 24-yard touchdown pass with 22 seconds to go in the half.

Shawano also scored on their first drive of the second half, as Timm and Lowney teamed up for a 36-yard touchdown pass with 10:19 to go in the third quarter. Timm scored on a two-point conversion run and the Hawks had a 21-7 lead.

Schmidt wrapped up the scoring with a 6-yard run with 10:59 remaining in the game.

Waupaca had a chance to tie the score late in the game, as Schmidt set the Comets up inside Shawano’s 10-yard line with a long run. Waupaca eventually had the ball at the 1-yard line, but Shawano’s defense kept the Comets out of the end zone and Waupaca turned the ball over on downs with just over two minutes remaining.

The Hawks picked up a first down and were able to run out the clock.
Waupaca outgained the Hawks 241-109 on the ground behind Schmidt’s 124 yards and 73 more from Davis Levine, but Timm completed 10 of 14 passes for 157 yards. Lowney finished with six catches for 94 yards.

Waupaca fell to 0-2 in the Bay and 0-2 overall, while Shawano improved to 1-1 and 1-1, respectively. Waupaca will head to New London Friday, Sept. 6, for a conference matchup with the Bulldogs. New London opened the season with a nonconference win over Luxemburg-Casco, but fell to West De Pere 52-14 Aug. 30 in their Bay opener.
