Clintonville wins tournament opener

Wittenberg-Birnamwood ended the season for the Clintonville girls’ basketball team Feb. 28 by handing the Truckers a 67-65 overtime loss in the second round of the WIAA state tournament.
Abi Fraaza’s basket just before the buzzer gave the Chargers a 67-65 win in a Division 3 regional semifinal in Wittenberg.
The Chargers’ season then ended the following day with a 56-35 loss to Freedom in a regional final.
Clintonville had opened the tournament Feb. 25 with a 68-10 win over Tomahawk.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood built a 31-25 halftime lead, but the Truckers forced overtime by outscoring the home team 30-24 in the second half.
The Chargers then outscored the Truckers 12-10 in the extra period.
Clintonville tied the game at 65-65 with 4.8 seconds remaining in overtime, but Fraaza took the ball down the court and scored two of her game-high 30 points just before the buzzer.
Elly Arndt and Erin Viergutz led Clintonville with 21 points each.
Clintonville 68, Tomahawk 10
A cold-shooting Tomahawk team turned out to be no problem for the Truckers.
Clintonville led 43-9 at halftime before holding the Hatchets to a single free throw in the second half.
Viergutz led the Truckers with 13 points and Selina Torrez added 12.
