Waupaca County Public Health reported the first death associated with COVID-19 in Waupaca County Saturday, March 28.

It is also the county’s first confirmed case of the novel coronavirus infection.

The county is not releasing information regarding the community where the case occurred or the gender of the victim.

Public Health Officer Jed Wohlt told the Waupaca County Post that the individual was in their mid-50s and hospitalized shortly after going into quarantine.

“The individual involved was in contact with another individual who tested positive for COVID-19,” he said.

“We are saddened by this death and our hearts go out to the family, friends, and community,” Wohlt said. “We strongly encourage our residents to stay safer at home unless activities are essential. That is the best way to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and protect the health and safety of our community.”

On Friday night, the state Department of Public Health reported a total of 13 deaths in Wisconsin, including Waupaca County.

Nearly 1,000 cases have been confirmed statewide.

The number of confirmed cases is growing by about 30% per day, according to the Medical College of Wisconsin.
