Felony charges follow crash

Passenger injured, driver hides

Manuel Montalvo-Garcia. 23, Poy Sippi, is charged with causing injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle, causing great bodily harm by operating a vehicle without a valid licence and hit-and-run causing injury.

At approximately 11 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, Waupaca police responded to the scene of a one-vehicle crash on Berlin Street near Royalton Street.

When they arrived, officers found a 2015 black Chevy Cruze that had slammed into a tree.

In addition to severe front-end damage, smoke was pouring out from under the hood.

According to the criminal complaint, the driver was not at the scene.

The front seat passenger was breathing but unconscious.

The victim was bleeding profusely from his head.

After Waupaca firefighters extricated him from the vehicle, Gold Cross Ambulance transported the injured man to ThedaCare Medical Center in Waupaca.

The victim suffered a laceration to his head that required 19 stitches.

He also suffered injuries to his brain and nose.

Officers eventually found the driver, identified as Montalvo-Garcia, hiding in a neighbor’s back yard, the complaint says.

Police reported that his eyes were bloodshot, and Montalvo-Garcia stumbled as he walked back to the crash scene.

An ambulance transported Montalco-Garcia to the local hospital, where he began shouting obscenities in Spanish and English, spitting and attempting to kick the police.

“He also made a neck cutting motion with his hand and indicated he was going to kill the ‘babies’ of law enforcement officers,” the complaint says.

Montalvo-Garcia has never been issued a driver’s license, according to state records.

He is currently in custody on a $15,000 cash bond.
