Amherst gets conference win

It was a chance for the Manawa football team to rebound from a double-overtime loss.

Amherst, however, had other ideas.

The Falcons scored on three straight possessions in the first half and added a pair of second-half touchdowns Oct. 9 and went on to hand the Wolves a 33-14 loss in Manawa’s Homecoming game.

Amherst improved to 3-0 in the Central Wisconsin Conference-Large and 3-0 overall, while Manawa fell to 1-2 in conference play and 1-2 overall.

After forcing an Amherst punt on the game’s opening possession, the Wolves drove 80 yards on their first drive and scored on Mason Wiesner’s 30-yard pass to Riley Krenke.

Amherst answered with touchdowns on its next three drives.

Tristan Schelvan tied the game at 7-7 with a 15-yard quarterback keeper and took the lead for good on the first play of the second quarter on Schelvan’s 42-yard pass to Carmelo Aleman.

The Falcons extended their lead to 19-7 on their next drive on Schelvan’s 36-yard pass to Jake Hoffman.

Amherst opened the second half by holding the Wolves to a three-and-out. The Falcons took over on their own 3-yard line and ate up most of the third quarter with a 97-yard drive that ended on Schelvan’s 10-yard run.

Manawa answered with a 68-yard drive. Wiesner capped the drive with a 9-yard run and his extra point cut Amherst’s lead to 27-14 with 11:38 remaining in the game.

Amherst answered with the game’s final scoring drive. Schelvan connected with Landon Moe for a 3-yard touchdown pass.

Both teams have CWC-Large road games scheduled for Friday, Oct. 16. The Falcons will head to Stratford for a matchup with the 3-0 Tigers, while the Wolves will head to Weyauwega to face Weyauwega-Fremont. Kickoff for both games is set for 7 p.m.
