Legion teams come up short in regionals

Waupaca, New London, Clintoville eliminated

A trip to state was not in the cards this season for the Waupaca, New London and Clintonville American Legion baseball teams.

All three teams were eliminated July 24 from their respective regional tournaments.

Waupaca and New London competed in a Class AA tournament at Hatten Park in New London, while Clintonville headed to Freedom for a Class A regional.

New London Regional

Waupaca opened the tournament July 22 with a 4-3 win over New London before dropping a 20-19 decision to Kaukauna July 23.
Shawano then eliminated Waupaca July 24 with a 9-4 loss.

New London rebounded from its loss to Waupaca with an 8-4 win over Pulaski July 24, but the Clippers’ season ended later that day with an 8-6 loss to Kaukauna.

• July 22: Waupaca 4, New London 3; Seymour 8, Pulaski 1; Shawano 8, Kaukauna 5.
• July 23: New London 8, Pulaski 4 (Pulaski eliminated); Kaukauna 20, Waupaca 19; Seymour 5, Shawano 4.
• July 24: Kaukauna 8, New London 6 (New London eliminated); Shawano 9, Waupaca 4 (Waupaca eliminated).
• July 25: Seymour 7, Kaukauna 4 (Kaukauna eliminated); Seymour 8, Shawano 2 (Shawano eliminated, Seymour wins regional).

Freedom Regional

Clintonville opened the tournament July 21 with a 13-1 win over Freedom, but ended up on the short end of a 4-3 score the next day against Little Chute.

The Diamond Cats stayed alive in the tournament July 23 with a 6-1 win over Oconto Falls, but then dropped an 8-1 decision to eventual champion Denmark July 24.
