Rhodes, Jack

Jack Rhodes, 80, of Waupaca, Wisconsin died of natural causes on Monday, October 10, 2022.

Jack and his wife Glenda retired to Waupaca in 2002 after an academic career that included teaching at Colorado College, the University of Utah and Miami University. He retired as Dean of Miami’s Hamilton Campus in 2002.

In Waupaca he was a co-founder of the Waupaca Area Community Foundation, an advocate for the establishment of the Waupaca campus of Fox Valley Technical College and a founder of the Waupaca Duplicate Bridge Club. He was active in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Rotary, and the Waupaca Historical Society. Jack also served on the Board of the Wisconsin Historical Foundation and chaired the Board of the Fox Valley Community Foundation.

Following his move to Waupaca, Jack took up the challenge to provide film programs for the Waupaca Public Library. The collaboration between Jack and the library, interrupted by Covid, continues to the present day. Classic film programs will be presented by the library as long as there is community interest.

Jack also enjoyed teaching film seminars for Lawrence University at Bjorklunden, Lawrence’s Door County campus, and introducing classic movies for WegaArts International Film Festivals.

Jack Rhodes was born in Seattle, Washington, June 5,1942, the son of Jack and Violet Hughes Rhodes. He grew up on army posts, graduated from high school in Lawton, Oklahoma, earned a BA from the University of South Dakota and a PhD from the University of Texas. He married Glenda Terrell in 1964.

His survivors include wife Glenda of Waupaca, nephews Dan (Angie) Parker of Monroe, Louisiana and Mark (Barbara) Parker of Houston, Texas and brother-in-law Birney (Gloria) Terrell of Peterson, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Virginia Pingenot Parker. He will be missed by several cousins, other relatives, friends and business associates in the Fox Valley area.

Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, 2022 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Waupaca. A visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at Holly Funeral Home in Waupaca and again at 10 a.m. Saturday until time of service at the church.
