Scherrer coming from Boscobel

The search for the Waupaca School District’s next activities director has ended.
Rob Scherrer, assistant principal and activities director for the Boscobel School District in southwestern Wisconsin, will start his new job July 1 and replace Trevor Leopold, who is stepping down at the end of the 2022-23 school year.
Scherrer’s 22-year career in education includes stops in White Lake, Winneconne, Webster and Boscobel.
“I think the biggest thing that attracted me to Waupaca is I was a teacher in Winneconne for seven years, so I knew the tradition of Waupaca very well,” he said. “I saw that the opportunity was available and had some friends from Winneconne say, ‘Hey, the Waupaca job is open.’ I put my name in the ring and I was lucky enough to be chosen. I’m super-excited to get started there.”
After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Scherrer started at White Lake High School before coming to Winneconne, where he coached the girls’ basketball team to the program’s first and only trip to state in 2010 and also served as the football team’s offensive coordinator.
“From there, my family and I decided to move to Webster, Wisconsin, closer to my wife’s parents,” he said.
He taught physical education and also coached boys’ basketball, football and track.
Three years ago, Scherrer and his family moved to Boscobel, where he soon found himself coaching again.
“We decided to be a little closer to my parents, who live in Edgerton,” he said. “We were looking for coaches and couldn’t find any, so I’m also the head football coach here and boys’ basketball coach here. I’m wearing lots of hats.”
Scherrer announced his resignation from his Boscobel job on the school district’s Facebook page in March.
“I am very excited to announce that I will be joining a great organization next school year,” he wrote. “My family has been blessed with this opportunity and we are excited to set some new roots. This was not an easy decision, as we have made some tremendous friends. I have some awesome colleagues and have made some connections with students that will live on long after I leave Boscobel.”
Athletic director’s changing role
The role of the high school athletic director has changed over the years. Several school districts – including Waupaca – have an activities director that oversees athletics and extra-curricular activities.
“The No. 1 goal of the activities director, at least in my mind, is it’s really important to be involved in the community and broaden our horizons bigger than just athletics,” Scherrer said. “Many people think the activities director just deals with sports, but it’s lot deeper and bigger than that. You have to be detail-oriented and have a sense of what’s going on each week. You want to make sure you’re giving as much time to one activity as the next.
“Everybody thinks that their activity is the most important,” he said. “All the activities should be the most important to me. I try to make sure that I’m involved and have a big part in every activity that goes on. I think it comes down to paying attention to details, being organized and relying on people that know what’s going on to help you do that. I’m going to rely heavily on the people that are there already to help me get started.”
Scherrer is used to rescheduling activities – especially during the spring sports season – and said he will work closely with other athletic and activities directors.
“This job is like any other job, it’s all about relationships,” he said. “This time of year, things could change in a heartbeat.”
Although Scherrer doesn’t officially begin his new job for another three months, he’ll spend plenty of time in Waupaca in the near future.
“My family and I are building a house and moving out of Boscobel the first week of June,” he said. “I’ll be checking in on the house that we’re building, so I’ll be around.”
