Waupaca woman charged with theft

Janet L. Olson, 33, Waupaca, was charged Nov. 16 with felony theft.

She is accused of stealing more than $5,000 from her former employer, Victoria’s Bridal in Waupaca.

On July 14, the owner of Victoria’s Bridal first told police that she had discovered that an employee of 11 years had taken $170. She said she fired Olson but did not want to press charges because Olson had returned the money.

On Aug. 4, the owner spoke to police again. She told Officer Lisa Benitez that she wanted to pursue an investigation against Olson. She had reviewed her records and found that as far back as July 2008, Olson may have taken more than $5,000 in cash from 24 customers.

The store owner found that cash receipts were missing from a number of customer invoices that were paid in cash. She told police that after learning about the missing receipts, she called the customers whose receipts were missing to confirm that they had paid in cash.

The owner first became suspicious when she saw Olson on a surveillance video apparently fail to put $170 in the cash register on June 30.

Olson faces up to six years in prison if convicted of felony theft.
