Comets sweep Xavier

Waupaca’s softball team headed to Appleton Xavier Friday, April 20, and returned home with a pair of Eastern Valley Conference wins over the Hawks.

The Comets swept the Hawks in a doubleheader 3-1 and 9-8 and also fell to Little Chute 8-5 Tuesday, April 17.

Waupaca 3, Xavier 1

APPLETON – Waupaca improved to 5-2 in conference play and 6-3 overall while keeping Xavier winless.

Waupaca opened the scoring with a run in the top of the second inning, but the Hawks tied the game in the fourth. The Comets came up with two more runs in the fifth and held the Hawks scoreless the rest of the way.

Emerie Vasquez picked up the win on the mound as Waupaca outhit Xavier 7-5.

Waupaca 9, Xavier 8

APPLETON – Katie Barlow’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh gave Waupaca the win.

Both teams scored once in the first inning. The Comets added two more in the second, but Xavier countered with three in the third.

Waupaca added four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-4 lead, but the Hawks answered with four runs in the fifth to take an 8-7 lead. Waupaca tied the game in the fifth.

Vasquez got the win on the mound. Natasha Smith had three of Waupaca’s 11 hits, while Barlow and Mandy Tomlinson had two each.

Little Chute 8, Waupaca 5

WAUPACA – Katie Schumacher had a big day for the Mustangs, as she had three hits, including a home run, and was also the winning pitcher.

The Mustangs trailed 2-1 heading into the third inning, but scored three times in the third and added two runs in the fourth to take a 6-2 lead.

Waupaca cut into the lead with a run in the fifth, but Little Chute added single runs in the sixth and seventh to go up by five. The Comets scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn’t get any closer.

Jessica Borntrager had two hits and scored twice for Waupaca, while Carli Navin homered and Allie Walkush tripled.

Waupaca traveled to Winneconne Tuesday, April 24, to face the Wolves and will open a two-game home stand at 4:45 p.m. today (Thursday, April 26) against Berlin. The Comets will also host Iola-Scandinavia in a nonconference matchup at 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 27.
