A 21-0 halftime deficit turned out to be too big of a hole for the Iola-Scandinavia football team.
Manawa outgained the Thunderbirds 373-226, including 288-121 on the ground, Sept. 28 in a 29-13 Central Wisconsin 8 Conference win.
Not only did the T-Birds fall to 1-4 in CWC-8 play and 2-4 overall, the loss also knocked them out of playoff contention.
Logan Hass opened the scoring with a 10-yard run in the first quarter and added a 17-yard run in the second quarter. Donny Sell also hooked up with Wesley Krauss on a 55-yard touchdown pass before halftime.
Kristian Welch put the T-Birds on the board with a 65-yard TD run in the third quarter, but the Wolves added to their lead in the fourth quarter with Sell’s 9-yard pass to Krauss. The T-Birds’ Holdyn Mast capped the scoring with a 1-yard run.
Welch led the T-Bird ground game with 75 yards in only four carries, while Hass carried the ball 39 times for 214 yards to lead Manawa.
I-S quarterback Nick Wavruk completed six of 15 passes for 67 yards, including two for 42 yards to Andrew Bauer.
The Wolves had a 19-9 advantage in first downs and ran 73 players, compared to the T-Birds’ 48.
The T-Birds will host Amherst for Homecoming at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, before closing out the regular season Friday, Oct. 12, at Shiocton.
