Traffic stop leads to heroin bust

Michael J. Klein, 29, Waupaca, is charged with possession of heroin with intent to deliver, possession of marijuana and misdemeanor bail jumping.

On April 21, Klein appeared in Waupaca County Circuit Court on misdemeanor charges of animal neglect. He was released from custody on a $1,000 signature bond.

Shortly before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, Waupaca County Sheriff’s Deputy Bryan Strobusch observed a vehicle with no rear-plate lamp at Shadow Road and State Highway 22 in Waupaca. He subsequently made a traffic stop.

According to the criminal complaint, the driver, who identified himself as Klein, did not have a license with him. Deputy Nick Traeger arrived to assist at the scene.

Strobusch smelled the odor of marijuana and began questioning Klein, who reportedly said there was a plastic bag with heroin between the driver’s seat and the center console, which was found after a search.

Klein asked if he could smoke a cigarette, and Traeger retrieved a pack of cigarettes from Klein’s car.

He handed the cigarettes to Strobusch and suggested there may be heroin inside the pack. Strobusch reported finding more heroin inside the pack of cigarettes.

The officers found a total of six bindles of heroin and a small amount of marijuana inside the vehicle, the complaint says.
