WAUPACA – The Opening is a new series of adventurous music presented by the Waupaca Community Arts Board (WCAB) and the next event will be on Saturday, Nov. 7 with a screening of Fritz Lang’s silent science-fiction classic Metropolis. The film will be accompanied by a live score performed right in front of the film by Nashville pedal steel innovator Luke Schneider and Ryan Norris of Coupler.
Doors open at 6 p.m. and the film begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Woodpile Foundation Performance Hall at the Waupaca Community Arts Hub. Tickets are $20 and available at https://buytickets.at/waupacacommunityartsboard/2488610. The hall seats about 100.
The film
A city run by machines. A robot built to act like us. Lang’s 1927 vision of a future city feels startlingly current, and Schneider and Norris bring it to life with a live score. The performance is co-presented with Wega Arts and takes place days before the Weyauwega International Film Festival (Nov. 11-14), making it a perfect warm-up for film lovers.
“The Opening is built on a simple idea: welcome the unfamiliar, and listen deeply,” said JT Turner, founder of The Opening. “Adventurous artists often pass right by small towns and rural areas like ours on the way to bigger cities, and we wanted to route them here. But the music is only half of it. Research suggests our willingness to try new sounds fades as we get older, and that it comes back with exposure. Every time we make room for something we haven’t heard before and listen closely before deciding what we think, we practice welcoming first and judging later. We believe that makes us more curious, more open, and more connected to one another, and we hope it draws people from across the region who see Central Wisconsin as a place where adventurous ideas circulate. A heady silent film from 1927 that speaks to our times, scored live by two critically acclaimed musicians known for their adventurous artistry, is exactly that kind of night.”
