Airport continues to grow

Posted

WAUPACA – City council approved an easement for additional gas and electric lines to be placed at the Waupaca Municipal Airport to connect to hangars, as the airport continues to see rapid growth.

Matt Klatt, airport manager, said currently there are 23 privately owned hangars, eight city-owned hangars and one corporate-owned hangar.

Klatt also said that there are 25 people currently on their waiting list for a hangar at the airport.

The new lines are projected to be located at the north end of the airport, where there are a few hangars that already exist, said Justin Berrens, public works director.

Berrens said that future expansion should not encroach on the easement, either.

“We’ve been doing a lot out at the airport because we’ve seen quite a bit of growth with hangars, and this is in that same vein,” Berrens said.

In the last four years there have been five new privately owned hangars constructed, with more planned in 2027, Klatt said.

There is also an additional T-hangar that will be completed in the spring which will house an additional nine aircrafts, Klatt said, and those will be given to those on the waiting list.

A T-hangar is composed of rows of individual hangar units inside of a larger building, Klatt said, comparing them to a mini-storage unit.

Klatt said, this project was 90% funded through federal and state entitlements and grants with the city covering a little less than 10%.

The federal entitlements are through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and they are used specifically for airport development and are funded with money generated from aviation fuel taxes.
