AMHERST- In Level 1 of the WIAA playoffs, the Amherst Falcons hosted the Wittenberg-Birnamwood Chargers on Oct. 23. This was the second week in a row that the two teams met.
In the first quarter, Amherst took a 7-0 lead as running back Ayden Nerdahl took an option pitch 10 yards for a touchdown.
Amherst struck again as a bad snap went over the Chargers’ punter’s head and JC Bohman recovered in the end zone as the Falcons took a two-score lead.
A quarterback keeper by the Chargers nearly went 50 yards for a touchdown, but Nerdahl tracked him down at the five-yard line and punched the ball out to force a fumble and give the Falcons possession.
With four minutes left to go, Nerdahl scored again to make it a 22-0 game as he ran in a touchdown from five yards out as he took a direct snap.
Wide receiver Cal Lusic scored for the Falcons as he took a reverse handoff 14 yards and the Amherst lead became 29-0.
Lusic on what the Falcons need to do moving forward: “We just need to put the pieces together in practice, trust the coaching, trust the process, trust the players.”
Nerdahl scored again in the third quarter, catching his second pass of the season and securing his first receiving touchdown of the year as he took a 47-yard screen pass in Amherst, and the Falcons went up 36-0.
The Falcons remained steadfast as they completed the 36-0 shutout and won their second consecutive game against the Chargers to move on to Level 2 of the playoffs, where they will host Elk Mound.
Nerdahl finished with 143 total yards and three total touchdowns, along with two forced fumbles on defense.
