County garage to serve as Warhawk emergency site

Posted

WEYAUWEGA – The Weyauwega-Fremont School District has designated the Waupaca County Highway Department garage as a parent information and reunification site in the event of a school emergency, officials said.

A memorandum of understanding between the school district and the county was reviewed at a school board meeting last month and outlines responsibilities for school staff, law enforcement, and county personnel during such events.

Don Lederhaus, who oversees safety, security, emergency preparedness, and transportation for the district, said the site was established last year in collaboration with the Waupaca County Highway Department.

“The Weyauwega-Fremont School District, other schools in the county, and emergency services worked to have a plan that allows the students to be reunified with their parents or guardians as safely as possible following any type of incident at the school,” he said.

In an emergency, the school district would coordinate with all emergency services through a Unified Incident Command system and notify county highway staff that the reunification plan is being activated, he said.

“The Weyauwega-Fremont School district has reminded the parents and guardians of the students to have a list of emergency contacts for each of the students so the process to pick up students can go as smoothly as possible at the reunification site,” he said. “The school district would also ask for patience with the reunification process.”

The highway department garage is located at 2670 County Road A in Waupaca and can accommodate up to 800 people.
