Stevens Point servers hacked

Posted

STEVENS POINT — In the early morning hours of Sept. 23, Stevens Point was alerted to an issue with several city servers. It was determined that unauthorized access was obtained to the city network. That access was cut off by the city’s IT department.

The investigation is ongoing; however, the city has found no evidence that any citizen data was compromised. So far, the city has found no evidence that any confidential citizen or employee information was compromised or captured. In a press release, Mayor Mike Wiza stated, “We are also confident that the affected units (about 1% of the city’s total devices) have been quarantined and software has been installed to continually monitor the entire network for further anomalies.”

The city is anticipating two weeks before operations are fully functional again. Emergency services are still operational and critical city functions remain in place. Modified work options are being put in place to restore normal work routines. Emails and phones may still experience intermittent functionality and response times will be slower.
