Kayaker rescued from Wolf River floodwaters

Posted

WEYAUWEGA — On Sunday evening of April 12 at around 6:30 p.m., the Weyauwega Fire Department was dispatched to rescue a kayaker who capsized in flooded woods along the Wolf River.
The victim was accompanied by another kayaker who remained in their own kayak and was able to keep the individual above water while calling for help. Through the use of the what3words system, dispatchers were able to provide highly accurate location information, significantly improving response efficiency.
First-arriving crews drove in with a UTV through a flooded roadway, inflated a rescue boat, sent up a drone and put on their cold-water rescue suits. Within 25 minutes, the crew was able to get the kayaker into the rescue boat after navigating flooded timber and dodging debris flowing downriver. Back on dry ground, the patient was transferred to EMS personnel and sent to the hospital.
