SPENCER – The Manawa Wolves took on the Spencer/Columbus Rockets in an away game on Oct. 2, hoping to pick up their third win of the season.
The Rockets got on the board first when Jackson Hoeper ran in a touchdown from the Manawa two-yard line.
Manawa responded with a 55-yard rushing touchdown by running back Carter Barrington and a two-point conversion for an 8-6 lead.
The Wolves extended their advantage when quarterback Carson Stroud threw a screen pass to Reed Schlueter, who took a 46-yard touchdown to make it 14-6.
Schlueter on Manawa’s offensive success,“We try to reach all three levels, so we try to get the run established, than we got bubbles than we go deep, and the deep ones usually hit big,”
Spencer/Columbus answered with a drive that ended in a five-yard touchdown run by Hoeper with a two-point conversion to tie the game at 14-14.
Stroud put Manawa back on top when he found Barrington for a 39-yard touchdown pass to give the Wolves a 22-14 lead after a successful two-point conversion.
The Rockets pulled within two points after Hoeper scored his third touchdown of the night as the deficit went to 22-20 in the third quarter.
Stroud extended the Wolves’ lead with a seven-yard touchdown run on fourth and goal that made the lead 30-20 after a successful two-point conversion.
Manawa’s defense held up the remainder of the game to secure a win and improve their record to 3-4.
