Memorial ribbon cutting and 9/11 observance in Greenville

Posted

GREENVILLE — Greenville Fire & EMS will hold a special 9/11 observance ceremony on Friday, Sept. 11, at 5 p.m. to mark the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks and honor fallen first responders.

The event will take place at the Greenville Fire Station, located at W6914 Parkview Drive. Attendees are instructed to use the Parkview Drive entrance.

The ceremony will mark the official rededication and relocation of two World Trade Center steel beams to a newly constructed 9/11 memorial plaza on the new fire station grounds. Program events include guest speakers, Honor Guard members, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony to welcome the historic steel artifacts to their permanent home.

A lasting local tribute

The two authentic structural steel beams from Ground Zero were originally acquired by the Greenville Fire Department in 2011 through the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey ahead of the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

Initially dedicated outside the former Greenville Safety Building on Highway 15, the department set plans to move the beams following the construction of the new Fire & EMS Station on Parkview Drive to give the tribute a prominent, updated home.

Updated memorial plaza

The newly designed memorial plaza features the dual steel beams mounted vertically to symbolize the Twin Towers. Surrounding the base of the beams is a custom stone-paved reflection pool, framed by stacked stone retaining walls, a concrete plaza, and flagship displays.

Recessed lighting installed around the pool will illuminate the steel beams at night.

The public is invited to attend the rededication and observance.
