No pennies back at Kwik Trip

Posted

WAUPACA – In the future, Abe Lincoln will be remembered more on five-dollar bills than pennies. Kwik Trip is the first retailer in the area to implement a penny policy.
The Trump administration’s order to the Treasury to stop minting new pennies earlier this year has caused a nationwide shortage and making it difficult for retailers to return exact change. Banks are rationing what pennies they have on hand. The last pennies were minted in June.
It is illegal to round up return change to the nearest nickel so Kwik Trip and other retailers are rounding down. From cents .01 to .04, return change total will round to .00 and cents .06 to .09 will round to .05. Kwik Trip will accept pennies for payment but they will not be present in return change. Digital transactions will remain accurate to the cent.
In this newspaper’s coverage area, there are two Kwik Trips in Waupaca, five in Stevens Point, two in New London, one in Clintonville, and one in Hortonville.
