On Composite Selves

Posted

Dear Reader,

In the intricate tapestry of human relationships, each thread represents a unique perspective of who we are. Your mother may have seen you as a compassionate individual, always ready to lend a helping
hand. Your father might have viewed you through the lens of hard work and strategic thinking, qualities that reflect his own values and aspirations for you. Your wife possibly thinks of you as a loving father, dedicated to your family and committed to nurturing your children. And in your children’s eyes, you could be the dad who believes that with determination, anything is possible.

These distinct views from the people closest to us shape our identities, creating a composite of who we are. We manage our lives through the reflections of these relationships, adapting and evolving based on the roles we play. Yet, amid this dynamic interplay, it is crucial to recognize the importance of preserving a piece of our soul and heart for ourselves.

This personal reservation is not an act of selfishness but one of self-preservation. It is a sacred space where our truest selves reside, untouched and unaltered by external influences. This inner sanctum allows us to reflect, rejuvenate, and reconnect with our core values and passions. It is where our dreams take root and where our intrinsic motivations flourish, and possibly have the greatest impact on the lives we affect. We become better partners, parents, friends, and colleagues when we nurture our individuality. This balance enables us to give more authentically to those we love.

So, as we journey through life, let us embrace the mosaic of our composite selves. Let us cherish the diverse ways in which we are perceived and the roles we fulfill. But let us also honor the quiet, inner voice that whispers our deepest truths. In doing so, we create a harmonious blend of connection and self-awareness, enriching both our lives and the lives of those around us.
