Park to get new fishing pier

Posted

IOLA - On October 14, the American Legion Sheveland-Taylor Post 14 approved the addition of a fishing pier to the Veterans Memorial Park, during their monthly meeting.
“I think this will be a great addition not only to the park, but also the community,” said Holly Neumann, who is heading the project. “My husband is a veteran and fishing is something that he and I have always enjoyed together. So putting a fishing pier at the Veterans Park, seems like a perfect fit. I want others to have the have the opportunity to enjoy fishing just as much as we have.”
According to Neumann, Lyle Mork, was instrumental in making the Veteran Park what it is today.
“Through my work at the Waupaca County Post, I got to know Lyle and many other veterans from the area,” Neumann said. “Lyle and I had talked about the addition of a fishing pier and he was excited about the idea. Unfortunately, he is no longer with us to see it become a reality, so I am taking on that task.”
The pier will feature a walkway that is 20-feet long, leading out to a 10-foot by 20-foot surface. It will sit approximately 17 feet off of the shoreline giving fisherman the ability to reach deeper water. Once installed, the pier will not require any maintenance.

Total cost of this project will be $25,000.
Neumann is hoping the get the support of the community and has created tiered donation levels which include the following:
Diamond: $10,000+
Emerald: $5,000-$9,999
Platinum: $2500-$4,999
Gold: $1000-$2499
Silver: $500-$999
Bronze: $100-$499
Quartz: $99 and below
Contributions can be mailed to the American Legion Post 14, PO Box 67, Iola, WI 54945. Please put Pier Project in the memo area of your check.
Any questions can be directed to Holly Neumann at hollyneumann@hotmail.com or by calling (715) 281-4370.
“When people come to use the fishing pier, hopefully they will stop and take a look all the monuments at the park as well,” Neumann said. “This could serve as a way to bridge gap between the younger generation and the veterans from our community.”
